Welcome to Harlem

Known for its history, music, culture, food, architecture, and institutions like the Apollo Theatre, Harlem, a legendary New York neighborhood on the island of Manhattan, has historically been considered the center of Black culture in America. Harlem stretches from 110th to 165th streets, from the East River to the Hudson River on the west side. Harlem encompasses several communities: East Harlem (also known as Spanish Harlem), Sugar Hill (‘the Hill’), Central Harlem, (‘the Valley’), Mt. Morris, and Morningside Heights (‘the Columbia area’).

You will enjoy exploring the institutions which anchor Harlem such as the legendary Apollo Theatre, one of America’s most famous music halls and a national landmark which still offers live performances by well known entertainers such as Patti LaBelle, and KD Laing; the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a branch of the NY Public library which archives many original works by noted writers such as Langston Hughes and Richard Wright; The Studio Museum, a two floor art museum which features up and coming Black artists and also houses the James Van Der Zee collection of photographs of Harlem from the 1920’s through the 1980’s; El Museo del Barrio, which celebrates Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture and art; and the Morris-Jumel Mansion, Manhattan’s oldest house and headquarters to General George Washington during 1776.

You will enjoy Harlem’s musical venues such as the world famous Lenox Lounge, Showman’s, St. Nicholas Pub and the Shrine which often features Afro-Pop and New Orleans musicians. Whether you decide to worship with the community at Abyssinian or Canaan Baptist Churches, eat a joyous Sunday brunch at Londel’s or Amy Ruth’s or take a walking tour to admire the architecture on Astor and Striver’s Row, you will find many unexpected experiences here. Harlem is a large community with a wide range of activities for the whole family. Welcome to my neighborhood.
